Will the hotel room still have a television in 2025?

“No, no TV, but a screen. From research by
GuestCompass shows that screens in hotel rooms are ‘not so smart’ need to be. Why? You can read that here.”

Column April 2021

If you invest in a nice TV as a hotel, your guest then (hardly) doesn’t use it: Get rid of that thing. Or does the TV still have potential? GuestCompass will find out.

Our observations

For the hotel room TV, the bigger the screen, the more channels and features, the better. Guests prefer to watch a screen on which they can also watch their favorite series, films and programs from streaming services such as Netflix and Videoland. Being able to stream your own content is top-notch for hotel guests and with a good in-room entertainment service you can do that too: #topservice here.

Advantages and disadvantages of the television

Almost every hotel room has a TV. Yet as a hotel you can distinguish yourself with the TV. It does require an investment. Guests prefer to be able to watch their favorite series anywhere. If that is possible on the ‘smart’ hotel TV, you as a hotel respond well to the personal needs of guests and at the same time increase the quality experience of the entire hotel room. That means undisturbed ‘bing’ for guests and bingo for you ☺.

Our vision

Watching TV is a thing of the last century. In hotels, guests look ‘smart’: at stupid screens that they operate via their telephone. In the future, those screens will hopefully have a touchscreen so that they can be used and operated anywhere: extremely user-friendly. You can go home or call the reception at any place. The same goes for making conference calls. This is especially beneficial for business guests.

What trends do we see?

The TV will also have a different function in hotel rooms outside the Netherlands. Increasingly, the TV is an interactive ‘hub’ with which guests communicate (for example with the reception), search for information, control room functions such as light and temperature and stream their own content. The latter can be done via the smartphone, but also via a USB port to which guests can connect, for example, an Amazon Fire Stick or a Google Chromecast.

“Will there still be a TV in the hotel room in 2025?”

What does our panel say?

The television remains: a majority of our panel of hotel experts is sure of that. However, the TV will have a different look and function. “The TV offers several options. Guests can not only watch channels, but also stream their own series and movies,” said one of our panelists.

A majority of hotel guests also think that the television is here to stay. Guests make more demands on the (television) screen. “At least 32 inches”, one of the hotel guests filled in on our questionnaire.

The TV remains, but in a different jacket and with different functions. Through an in-room entertainment service, guests can stream their own content on the screen in the hotel room. This means you can enjoy watching TV as you would at home without the hassle, while simultaneously controlling room functions such as light and temperature and ordering room service.

More about our panel

Together with a panel of seven diverse hotel experts, we explore the hotel facilities of the future. In addition, we asked 482 hotel guests in the Netherlands and Belgium for their opinion about these facilities.
