Does your hotel room still have a minibar in 2025?

“Yes, but its content is changing. Research by GuestCompass shows that the minibar must either be empty or filled with the “correct” products. You can read what they are here. ”

Relaxing after a hot day: how do you do that? Well, at least not like that. Oh help, there goes your energy bill, nice #consciously busy ☹. Tip: regulate the room temperature and fill that minibar with cool drinks. That works. Otherwise, that minibar can go straight away. Or not?
GuestCompass will find out.

Our observations

Advantages and disadvantages of the minibar

With the minibar you can generate extra turnover as a hotel. At least if you offer a special range. No standard snacks and drinks, but a selection of beautiful (local) brands that seamlessly match your hotel concept. Guests want to try and pay for those products. In that case, the minibar pays off. Otherwise, it’s just a clumsy and expensive thing. Maintaining and refilling it is a time-consuming job.

Our vision

More and more hotels are removing the minibar. From cost savings (personnel costs) and from environmental considerations (high energy consumption). Unfortunately; the minibar can add value for both the hotel and the guest. For example, offer an empty minibar (with an on / off button) that a guest can use as a refrigerator for products that they buy themselves in the food shop in the hotel lobby. Or go for the all-inclusive variant where you calculate the use of the minibar in the room price, or offer it free of charge. The latter is possible when you use the minibar as a marketing tool. Hotel guests can test new products that manufacturers provide for free or at a low price.

What trends do we see?

More and more hotels outside the Netherlands are also opting for an empty minibar. They offer a food shop with food that matches the image of the hotel. Or a complete food market where drinks and snacks are freshly prepared. Guests buy whatever they feel like and possibly store the products in their minibar. What is also possible is the so-called tailor-made minibar. Guests can indicate in advance which products they want in the minibar. Personal service through and through. Especially when the minibar is supplemented with services such as a welcome cocktail of your choice or your own beer tap in the hotel room. This makes the minibar a true experience.

‘ Will the minibar still exist in 2025 ”.

What does our panel say?

The minibar remains: a small majority of our panel of hotel experts are sure of that. Hotels do offer the minibar differently, for example empty, like a refrigerator. And where the minibar disappears, it is replaced by (extensive) room service.

A small majority of hotel guests also want to keep the minibar. They do not comment on what exactly should be included. That there must be room for their own products.

The minibar remains, but with a different content. One that is more in line with the personal wishes of guests. An empty minibar that a guest can easily fill with products from the hotel shop. Or a full minibar with products that guests find special and / or choose themselves in advance. Preferably products that are competitively priced or – even better – free. Then the minibar provides that ultimate feeling of luxury and homeliness. And that is exactly what you want as a hotel ☺.
